Why the scholarship exists
Exceptional innovators often
follow unconventional paths.
The Dan Herbatschek Scholarship was founded to provide financial support, mentorship, and hands-on experience to students pursuing mathematics and machine learning—with a particular focus on individuals from underrepresented and nontraditional backgrounds.
Dan Herbatschek created the scholarship from the belief that exceptional innovators often follow unconventional paths. Many aspiring technologists are self-taught programmers drawn to AI but lack the mathematical foundation and real-world context needed to advance. This initiative bridges that gap, offering recipients $2,500 in financial aid, one-on-one mentorship, and priority consideration for internships at Ramsey Theory Group.
Dan is an applied mathematician and Columbia University graduate (Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa) whose own nonlinear academic journey—from intellectual history and philosophy to applied mathematics and AI—inspired this program. The scholarship is the beginning of a broader effort to expand access to AI education, including future scholarships for women in machine learning and partnerships with leading universities.
